Our Mission Statement

The Birmingham Society of Women Painters,

comprised of accomplished artists,

is committed to the highest standard of

creative expression, in furthering the interests

and development of individual members through collective activities, and in maintaining a

tradition of promoting art education.

The Birmingham Society of Women Painters (BSWP) has a strong history

of bringing together artists to further their shared interests. Founded in 1944

to provide formal instruction and workspace for women painters, the BSWP today

is a group of visually diverse artists striving for the highest level in creative expression.

The importance of community and art education links the generations of members.

In 1957 the organization won support from local business and community leaders to found the Bloomfield Art Association.  Three years later, an innovative proposal to transform an obsolete public works facility into a Community Center for the Arts was accepted, thriving today as the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center.

Our community includes professional artists and women for whom art is a high-priority avocation.  Membership is limited with new members chosen through

a selective process of nomination and portfolio review.  Members exhibit their work in juried shows at various galleries and venues in the metro Detroit area.  BSWP  holds monthly meetings, where individual and group accomplishments

are recognized and celebrated.  This sense of community is furthered by work- shops, critiques and field trip visits to artist’s studios, galleries and museums.

BSWP operates on a cooperative basis, with members volunteering and supporting through dues for all initiatives.
